Udupi: A case has been registered against two individuals at the Udupi City Police Station on charges of negligence regarding domestic and stray dogs that are causing trouble to the general public.
The case was registered based on a complaint lodged by Satish (35), who is working as a Health Inspector at the Udupi City Municipality. According to the complaint, on May 27, 2026, at 11:30 AM, as per the orders of the City Municipal Commissioner, a site inspection was conducted at a house near Sai Harsha Square building on Koladapete Road in Shivalli village of Udupi taluk.
At this time, two persons were present near the house, one of whom was identified as Varun Khemani, while the name of the other person is not known. The complaint mentions that when the officials informed them that the inspection was being conducted following complaints from the public about stray dogs, the accused raised objections.
During the inspection, it was observed that three dogs were coming towards the road from the compound of the house, and several other dogs were roaming freely in the courtyard of the house, with no arrangements made to control or tie them up.
The complaint states that when enquired with the local residents, they informed that the dogs chase and attempt to bite school-going children, elderly people on morning walks, and two-wheeler riders, thereby creating a fear of accidents by obstructing vehicles.
It is alleged that even though the municipality officials instructed the accused to relocate the dogs and take appropriate precautionary measures, they have failed to take any action so far.
Despite knowing that public safety could be endangered, a case has been registered at the Udupi City Police Station under Crime No. 75/2026 under Sections 291, 292, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for negligence, and an investigation has been taken up.
